ABOUT THE AURORA

The northern lights appear when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in Earth's upper atmosphere. This spectacular display of physics is particularly breathtaking under the dark skies of Lapland.

We use NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) real-time Kp index as the basis for our alerts. The Kp index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale of 0–9.

0–2
Quiet— Aurora rare or absent
3–4
Moderate— Possible in Lapland under dark skies
5–6
Active— Good visibility conditions in Lapland
7–9
Storm— Visible across all of Finland
